'Today was a good day' - Uplifting clip shows moment 'longest patient' leaves Edinburgh hospital

Amid the tragedies as coronavirus continues to claim lives, staff at an Edinburgh hospital have shared an uplifting story of recovery.

Mr Edwards, a patient who had spent over a month in Edinburgh's Western General Hospital, was allowed to return to his wife on Thursday.

An emotional clip shared by the hospital's Regional Infectious Diseases Unit captured Mr Edwards surprised reaction to a standing ovation from NHS staff.

Mr Edwards can be heard fondly comparing their tribute to the end of a rugby match in the "old days" before becoming emotional.

The unit said: "Today was a good day. One we worried may not come but after seven weeks and a very long recovery Mr Edwards, our longest stay patient, is headed home to his wife we wish you well."

According to the latest Scottish Government figures, as of midnight on Friday, the past week has seen a drop in the number of coronavirus patients in Lothians area hospitals, while the number of patients in intensive care has also declined.

In comparison to Last Saturday (9 May) when there were 197 people in hospital with confirmed or suspected COVID-19, this has since dropped by four.

There are also less Lothians patients receiving treatment in intensive care for confirmed or suspected coronavirus this week, with figures showing a drop of nine people when compared with 20 patients in ICU last Saturday.
