Today's weather: More scorching sunshine with highs of 23C - but cooldown ahead

Ireland basked in more glorious sunshine yesterday with sizzling highs of 23C and more toasty temperatures are expected today.

Shannon Airport recorded the highest temperatures yesterday with the mercury reaching a balmy 23.2C.

Carlow and Galway were also among the warmest spots yesterday with highs of 22C recorded at Oak Park in Carlow, as well as Gurteen and Athenry in Co Galway.

And temperatures hit 21.6C at Cork Airport.

There's more good news on the way today with the mercury set to rise again today after a cloudy start.

A Met Eireann forecaster revealed: "Staying humid for Thursday, again with a mix of cloud, sunny spells and warm hazy sunshine with good sunshine developing in places for the afternoon.

"Holding dry for most with just isolated showers. Highest temperatures of 17C to 23C, warmest away from eastern coasts in light easterly breezes.

A few showers may develop in the west and northwest overnight.

The outlook for the coming days is for "a lot of dry weather out to the end of the week, and gradually transitioning into fresher conditions."

Meanwhile, Friday will be dry in most areas with highs of 16C to 21C, warmest in the west and just a few light showers in the west and northwest.

The weekend looks set to stay dry with sunny spells, however, temperatures will dip slightly with highs of 14C to 18C.

Both Saturday and Sunday are expected to be sunny with the odd isolated shower as temperatures linger in the high teens.

But conditions are expected to deteriorate as we head into next week.

The forecaster added: "Monday should remain dry and fresh with some sunny spells. However, current indications suggest it will be turning more unsettled into mid-week."
