Drakeford insists Cardiff are 'simply and entirely wrong'
First Minister Mark Drakeford has told Cardiff Rugby representatives they were "entirely wrong" to criticise the Welsh government over their handling of the team's situation in South Africa.
A number of people within the club have criticised ministers for their perceived lack of empathy and help in getting the team home after South Africa was placed on the UK's red list following the emergence of the Omicron variant.
The bulk of the squad have now returned to the UK to quarantine at a Heathrow hotel, but six individuals remain stranded after testing positive for Covid-19.
Cardiff are now working with the Welsh Government to get them home as soon as possible.
Asked about the criticism of the Welsh government by some members of Cardiff Rugby, Drakeford told the BBC : "I think they are simply and entirely wrong because the rules are very clear and were made very clear to them.
"We have never had a quarantine hotel in Wales because we agreed at the very beginning with the UK government that Wales would not be an entry point for red-list countries.
"We haven't changed those rules for hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of people who have come back to Wales via the UK system, including - for example - people who are coming back to Wales to work in the National Health Service.
"It simply wasn't right or possible to change the rules for a particular group of people who, while I have huge sympathy for the predicament they found themselves in, needed to solve that predicament in the same way as anybody else would have to solve it."
Aki Seiuli: Tough but powerful moment
Dragons star Aki Seiuli has lifted the lid on the Samoa versus Baa-Baas cancellation last weekend.
The invitational side were due to face Samoa at Twickenham before the match was called off 90 minutes before kick-off due to an outbreak of coronavirus in their camp.
It sparked a stream of criticism from those in the game, but the Dragons prop says it was "tough" for the players who missed their opportunity too.
“We were getting ready for the warm-up when the management came in, put us in a huddle and broke the news to us,” said the prop, who was set to represent Samoa.
“We thought it would be good if we still chucked our rugby kit on and went out to sing the national anthem and do the Siva Tau for the fans that had come out and our families that had come from around Europe.
“We wanted to go out and I felt that was a powerful moment for such a small nation so rich in history. We wanted to go out and promote that.
“I’m still waiting to get the first game, but it was more emotional for the old fellas like Joe Tekori and other boys who were going to play their last game.
“They only just got released by their clubs because they wanted to play their last game and leave the jersey with a good performance and in a good place. That was tough for them.”
LRZ scoops Lions award
The accolades keep coming for World Rugby Breakthrough Player of the Year nominee Louis Rees-Zammit.
The flying Welshman has scoop a 'Try of the Tour' award for the Lions trip to South Africa.
Rees-Zammit's effort against the Sigma Lions in one of the warm-up matches was the five-pointer that did it for him.
It was a stunning move from the tourists as Jamie George fed Owen Farrell out the back before Chris Harris chipped in behind.
As soon as the chip landed in field, it was curtains for the hosts as Rees-Zammit raced to the loose ball ahead of the covering defenders to score.
The 20-year-old was presented the award by his former Hartpury coach Wayne Thompson.
Jaz does it again
Welsh Sevens star Jasmine Joyce has once again got the rugby world talking after her latest stunning try, this time coming at the Dubai Sevens.
The jet-heeled Team GB speedster has taken the sport by storm in recent weeks, with some of her remarkable efforts going viral on social media.
And it's happened again.
This time, Joyce was facing Fiji when she picked up a loose ball that had been spewed out the back of a ruck.
She then stood up two defenders before hitting the gas and racing down the touchline to dot down for yet another score.
"Is there a better rugby player in the world at the moment?" one user posted on Twitter.
It's a fair question.
