Today's rugby headlines as Cardiff Rugby chief slams Welsh Government, Munster return home and Scarlets stay in Belfast

Here are the latest rugby headlines for Wednesday, December 1.

Cardiff chief slams Welsh Government after South Africa struggle

Cardiff Rugby's chief operating officer has slammed the Welsh Government for their "appalling empathy" after they were left stranded in South Africa.

The Arms Park outfit have been stuck in Cape Town after South Africa was placed on the United Kingdom's red list amid growing concerns over the Omicron Covid-19 variant.

It has since been confirmed that Cardiff's travelling party - aside from the two members who tested positive for coronavirus - will fly to England on Thursday before undergoing 10 days of quarantine in a hotel.

But prior to the announcement, Rhys Blumberg voiced his anger at the Welsh Government on social media after feeling the region was not given sufficient support in their quest to return to the UK.

"Absolutely appalling empathy and support shown by @WelshGovernment with regards to @Cardiff_Rugby staff who are stuck in South Africa," he wrote on Twitter.

"No special treatment requested, just support to get them back on Welsh soil so they can start their quarantine. @PrifWeinidog @Eluned_Morgan."

It came after health minister Eluned Morgan stated no coronavirus isolation exceptions could be given.

Munster leave South Africa

A significant portion of Munster's travelling party left Cape Town last night to begin their period of isolation back home in Ireland.

They were granted permission to return to their homeland earlier this week but that was put on ice after they returned positive Covid-19 tests.

A total of four positive cases were found on Tuesday, adding to the one that had already been identified. The province say a total of 14 personnel - likely to include players and staff - will stay behind in South Africa for their mandatory quarantine.

Those returning home can serve their isolation periods 'at their own locations'.

Scarlets to stay in Belfast

Scarlets will isolate in Belfast for 10 days after failing to be granted permission to quarantine in Wales.

The region's 47-strong travelling party have been in the Northern Irish capital since returning from South Africa on Monday and had hoped to see out the remainder of their isolation period closer to home.

However, it has been confirmed that they will stay at the government managed facility in Belfast until the 10-day isolation period ends on Friday, December 10.

Executive chairman Simon Muderack wrote on Twitter: "Update on @scarlets_rugby situation. We will remain in an isolation hotel just outside Belfast for 10-day quarantine.

"The team and staff have been informed and are committed to make the best of the situation and recognise that we are all lucky to be safe and well."

Scotland international dies

The Scottish Rugby Union have confirmed the passing of current international Siobhan Cattigan.

News of Cattigan's passing was announced on Tuesday night, leading to an outpouring of tributes on social media.

The 26-year-old won 19 caps for her country after making her debut against Wales in 2018.

The SRU extended their condolences to Cattigan's family and friends and said that 'specialist employees' were providing support to those most affected.

Premiership head coach confirms former Wales prodigy's trial

Bath head coach Neal Hatley has confirmed Tom Prydie is currently on trial with the Premiership outfit.

The Rec outfit are without Anthony Watson due to injury and were determined to draft in cover for the England and Lions star.

And Hatley says Prydie's experience will be hugely beneficial to Bath as they bid to bring an end to their wretched run of results.

“Tom has come in, obviously with Ant [Watson] down and Tian Schoeman still coming back from his ACL injury he got at Newcastle [back in March]," he told our sister title SomersetLive.

“Tom was obviously Wales’ youngest capped player, he has played a lot of good rugby in a very good Scarlets side, he has played for the Dragons and he adds a bit of experience.

“He has come down for a few weeks, he has started off really well in training and he is helping back up Tom de Glanville [at full back] and as we move forward put his hand up to get picked in the side.

“He was leaving the Scarlets and it was a good opportunity for us to get help in an area we have been caught short in with Ant getting injured.”
