Today's Public Health Scotland infection rate data as almost 1,000 Covid patients in hospitals

Another 6,836 cases of coronavirus have been confirmed in Scotland – as the number of people in hospital with the disease creeps towards 1,000.

Figures have been published this afternoon by the Scottish Government and Public Health Scotland (PHS) as part of the national Covid-19 daily briefing.

Nationally, there are 928 patients being treated in hospital which is a steep rise of 45 from yesterday. There are currently 87 people with the disease being treated in ICUs.

The number of newly-reported positive coronavirus cases recorded by NHS Ayrshire & Arran has increased by 429 to 33,194.

Of the new cases, 159 were from East Ayrshire, 140 in North Ayrshire and 130 attributed to South Ayrshire.

A total of 487,654 positive tests have now been recorded from 2.912 million tests carried out since the start of the pandemic.

According to Public Health Scotland's rolling seven-day infection rate per 100,000 population, West Dunbartonshire has the highest rate in the country – at 1,258.8 as of Wednesday, September 8.

North Lanarkshire has the second-highest infection rate at 1,228.2 while Inverclyde was third with 1,177.0.

In terms of Ayrshire's three local authorities, North Ayrshire has the highest rate of 843.2 while East Ayrshire's rate is 738.5 and South Ayrshire's is 697.3.

A total of 19 of Scotland's 32 council regions have an infection rate below the national average of 811.5.

There have been 12 new deaths in the last 24 hours which means 8,210 people have passed away since March 2020.

However, data from the National Records of Scotland (NRS) shows 10,612 deaths had been registered up to Sunday, September 5 where the disease was mentioned on the death certificate.

Across the UK, the figure is 133,674 as of last night.

There are 61 patients being treated for the disease in Ayrshire hospitals, which is up five on yesterday, and seven in ICUs.

Nationally, a total of 4,133,606 people have received the first dose of a Covid vaccine and 3,757,337 have received their second dose.
