Scotland has recorded an overnight spike in Covid-19 cases – and a significant rise in the number of people being treated for the virus in hospital.
A futher 3,799 new cases of coronavirus have been reported in the last 24 hours – up from 2,363 yesterday.
Figures published by the Scottish Government and Public Health Scotland today also show there are 387 Covid patients in hospital which is an increase of 41 from yesterday.
There are 34 people with the illness being treated in ICUs across the nation which is an increase of two over the last 24 hours.
A further five people have also died from the disease meaning Scotland's Covid death toll now stands at 7,740.
In terms of Public Health Scotland's rolling seven-day infection rate per 100,000 population, Dundee City has the highest rate in the country — at 903.4 as of Tuesday, July 6.
Midlothian has the second-highest infection rate at 763.5 while East Lothian is third with 621.0.
Of Ayrshire's three local authorities, East Ayrshire has the highest rate of 400.8 compared to North Ayrshire's rate of 280.5 and South Ayrshire's 247.8.
Ayrshire accounted for 212 of the nation's new cases with 95 reported in North Ayrshire, 67 in East Ayrshire and 50 in South Ayrshire. The region has now recorded 22,000 cases since the start of the pandemic.

There are 16 Covid patients in Ayrshire hospitals – up two from yesterday – while fewer than five people are battling the disease in intensive care in the region.
A total of 3,890,176 people have received the first dose of a Covid vaccine and 2,808,902 have received their second dose
