Today's Public Health Scotland coronavirus 7-day infection rate update

A landmark has been achieved in Scotland's vaccination programme today as more than two million people across the country have received their first jab.

Figures have been published this afternoon by the Scottish Government as part of its national COVID-19 daily briefing.

And the news comes as it emerges that a further 624 cases of the disease have been diagnosed.

In terms of Public Health Scotland's rolling seven-day infection rate per 100,000 population, Glasgow City has the highest infection rate in the country at 139.2 as of Wednesday, March 17.

The second-highest is East Renfrewshire which has a rate of 137.1 while South Ayrshire (123.4) has the third-highest rate. The rate for Scotland is 75.2 and the full list of all councils is just below.

Elsewhere locally, North Ayrshire stood at 109.8. and in East Ayrshire it was 71.3.

Tragically, there have been another seven deaths recorded in the last 24 hours, although none were from the NHS Ayrshire & Arran health board area, which means 7,536 people have passed away since March 2020.

However, data from the National Records of Scotland (NRS) shows 9,831 deaths had been registered up to Sunday, March 14 where the disease was mentioned on the death certificate.

Across the UK, the figure is 125,831 as of last night.

The number of positive coronavirus cases recorded by NHS Ayrshire & Arran has risen by 45 to 16,119.

Of the new cases, 19 were from East Ayrshire; 19 attributed to North Ayrshire and seven in South Ayrshire.

There are fewer than five within the health board's region, in intensive care with confirmed COVID-19 which remains the same as yesterday.

In addition, the number of people in hospital with confirmed coronavirus at midnight was 39 which is down four on yesterday.

A total of 211,854 positive tests have been recorded since the end of February from 1.760 million tests carried out.

Across Scotland, as of 8.30am this morning, a total of 2,023,002 people had received the first dose of their Covid vaccine with 192,100 having received their second dose.
