Today's NYT Strands answer — Today's theme and hints

The official theme for NYT Strands #767 is... "In the paint."

And here's an unofficial hint from me: "Different (brush) strokes."

If you're still in the dark, here are some useful words to give you those valuable clue tokens:

  • PASTE
  • SLATE
  • LATER
  • CODE
  • LEAN
  • MATES
  • STALE
  • LOCATE

Still struggling? The spangram touches two opposite sides of the board (but can start and end anywhere), and will give you a hint about the connection between the answers. Today, it starts and ends with 'M'.

Scroll down to find out what it is...

It's MEDIUM.

“In the paint”

🔵🔵🔵🔵

Hi Strands fans. I struggled a bit today, despite seeing the spangram right away. The word MEDIUM written in a straight line across the fourth row just jumped out at me from the get go.

That should have set me up nicely, but I didn't know what it meant, even within the context of the theme ("In the paint"). So I used a clue, which revealed ENAMEL, and I realized it was about different kinds of paint.

This, to put it mildly, is not my forte. Nonetheless, I was able to complete the top half easily enough as it was essentially two anagrams. PASTEL was on the right, with FRESCO on the left.

Moving onto the bottom half, I found WATERCOLOR in the bottom-left corner, but then was a little stuck. Eventually, I spotted ACRYLIC spelt backwards above it, and that just left TEMPERA in the bottom-right corner to complete the puzzle.

Strands #766

“We're going under cover”

🔵🟡🔵🔵

🔵💡🔵🔵

Hi Strands fans. I wasted quite a bit of time looking for words related to being undercover (disguise? detectives?) today, having missed the space between the words "under" and "cover" in the theme.

Fortunately, I eventually spotted BLANKET in the top half of the board, and was on my way. Having already seen "clothes" below it, I extended this to spell the spangram of BEDCLOTHES to split the board in two. I then grabbed QUILT in the bottom-right corner.

Two words were left to find in the top half. THROW was in the top-right corner, which left me to connect AFGHAN in a straight line on the opposite side.

I drew a blank on the bottom half, though, and had to use a clue. That revealed SPREAD on the left-hand side, leaving me with a simple anagram to decode the final answer. It was, of course, COMFORTER.
