Today's NYT Strands answer — Today's theme and hints

The official theme for NYT Strands #646 is... "A Nobel effort".

And here's an unofficial hint from me: "Award winning contributions".

If you're still in the dark, here are some useful words to give you those valuable clue tokens:

  • CREATES
  • STYLE
  • PEAS
  • CAREER
  • CINEMA
  • TIES
  • DICE
  • MALE
  • TEAS

Still struggling? The spangram touches two opposite sides of the board (but can start and end anywhere), and will give you a hint about the connection between the answers. Today, it starts with 'L' and ends with 'S'.

Scroll down to find out what it is...

It's LAUREATES.

“A Nobel effort”

Hi Strands fans. A nice easy one today, and more enjoyable than usual to write up, given some of my clue words would make entertaining additions to the field of Nobel prizes (style, ties and peas, especially).

The theme of "A Nobel effort" made it pretty clear this was going to be about the international prizes, so I began thinking of the categories. I found PHYSICS on the right of the board, followed by PEACE below it.

This allowed me to get the spangram of LAUREATES written down the middle, which in turn isolated MEDICINE in the top-right corner.

Two were left to find on the other side. CHEMISTRY was in the top-left corner, which just left LITERATURE below it to complete the puzzle.

“On the court”

Hi Strands fans. Like the recent puzzle about Ice Hockey, I worried I was going to be locked out of today's Strands in an avalanche of obscure terms that those of us in Europe aren't familiar with.

I needn't have worried. The puzzle was simple enough for me to get without clues.

It helped that I found the spangram of BASKETBALL right away. As it was in a hoop in the middle, I was immediately able to get two answers in the middle: JUMP and DUNK.

It also made finding the two above it easy enough: BLOCK was on the right, with REBOUND on the left.

That left three answers to find in the bottom half of the board. DRIBBLE was in the bottom-right corner, with SCREEN - the one basketball term I hadn't heard of - immediately below the spangram.

That just left GUARD in the bottom-left corner to complete the puzzle.
