Today's newsdesk update

After yesterday's row over telling children about Santa, we're mesmerised by Madame Tussauds' take on the nativity, as pictured above. So we're asking talkboard users who they would pick to star in their nativity scene (although it's doubtful anyone could top Tony Blair, George Bush and Prince Philip as the three wise men).

On a more serious note, as events unfold in Northern Ireland we'll keep track of what's being said and explain what's going on in our Q&A. We've also reported on the failure of of appeals by peace protesters and the police over the legality of action taken by Gloucestershire officers against anti-war demonstrators in March 2003.

Guardian Unlimited Politics is following PMQs as it happens and we're scouring the government's announcements on climate change to find out what it all means.

Finally, we're wondering how useful you're finding the newsdesk update: does it go on the blog too late or too early? Is there enough information on what we're planning to do or too much? What else would you like us to mention? Have your say in the comments below.
