Today’s Interview: KY Secretary of State Michael Adams on primary voter registration deadline

Monday is the deadline for Kentuckians to register to vote in the upcoming May Primary election. Voters will be narrowing the field for the executive branch in Kentucky’s government. The commonwealth’s Secretary of State, Michael Adams said the race for the top seat will see a lot of action.

“The governor on the ballot of course, there are primaries in both parties, the Democratic primary isn’t seen as competitive, the Republican primary certainly is. The Lt. Governor will not be on the ballot, the law was changed for the nominee of the part to be appointed by the nominee of the party for governor by August.”

Secretary Adams said the absentee voting portal is now open, but he said he isn’t expecting a high turnout for the primary.

“The fact that you have so few contested primaries on the Democratic side, I think, will depress Democratic turnout in the primary. I think you will see higher turnout on the Republican side, but a lot of Republicans are not used to having primaries, because for a long time the Republican Party wasn’t that competitive and they didn’t have a lot of primaries, so, it’s kind of a new thing for Republican voters.”

Secretary Adams said there should be plenty of poll workers in the field to help elections run smoothly. He is encouraging Kentuckians to take advantage of early voting. Polls will be open May 11th-13th that is the Thursday, Friday, and Saturday before election day.
