Today’s horse racing results LIVE: Action from Newmarket Guineas Festival as Coronation Cup headlines card

Welcome to the Evening Standard’s live coverage of today’s horse racing at Newmarket.

With the flat season finally under way behind closed doors this week following sport's coronavirus shutdown, proceedings are set to step up a notch on Friday with a bumper racecard at the QIPCO Guineas Festival in Suffolk.

There are 10 races in total taking place today, beginning with the Betway EBF Stallions Maiden Fillies' Stakes Div I at 1:15pm BST and concluding at 6:30pm.

The highlight of the day comes in the form of a star-studded Coronation Cup Stakes, where Ghaiyyath is favourite to claim victory ahead of the likes of Stradivarius, Defoe and Anthony van Dyck.

Thursday scare at Newmarket

A pane of glass fell from the grandstand onto seats at Newmarket on Thursday.

Racing was taking place for the first time on the Rowley Mile at Headquarters since the resumption of racing - and the absence of spectators might well have been a blessing on this occasion.

Amy Starkey, who runs Newmarket as East Regional Director for Jockey Club Racecourses, said: "A window fell out of the Champions Gallery on the third floor on to the level two seating for no explained reason. We are now investigating why and how it's occurred.

"Clearly it is very concerning and thankfully we are staging racing behind closed doors so no members of the public or our team have access to the area."

Simon Holt was commentating at the meeting.

He said: "The cameraman alerted me to what happened and we looked across and there was all the glass on the seats and the window had come out.

"I didn't hear the bang, but the cameraman heard it. Thank goodness there were no spectators as it could have been much worse."
