Today FM host Dermot Whelan says horrific fall that left him in a pool of blood inspired him to cut down on alcohol

Today FM DJ Dermot Whelan says a horrific fall that left him in a pool of blood inspired him to cut down on alcohol.

The comedian has previously revealed that he was burnt out from showbiz and said becoming a meditation teacher has helped him cope with stress.

And the former Republic of Telly star revealed that his decision to embrace self-care was inspired by a terrifying drunken fall.

He told the Real Health podcast: "It started for me in 2010. It was the weekend and I woke up at the bottom of a flight of stairs. I had knocked myself out.

"It was the stairs of a karaoke bar. The day had been quite long, the night was still going and I had somehow lost my balance on this flight of stairs and I woke up in a pool of blood.

Today FM host Dermot Whelan says showbiz burnt him out - but mediation is helping stress

"I remember opening my eyes and all I could hear was a hen party in the room next to me singing It's Raining Men and I thought: 'This is not how I want it to end. This is not the exit from planet earth I really had anticipated.' Something a bit more graceful I thought maybe.

"I went to the hospital and thankfully I didn't have any broken bones but I was concussed and it was at that time I went: 'Do you know what? Not having an outlet for my stress and choosing alcohol is probably not the answer.' So I decided there has got to be something else.

"I found out she taught meditation. So I said: 'how about we do a swap? I do your book launch if you introduce me to meditation?"

And the funnyman says he finds spreading the importance of mindfulness and self-care even more rewarding than his day job.

He added: "I get more joy from teaching people meditation than doing stand-up comedy.

"I played the 3 Arena and having 10,000 people laughing at your jokes is living the dream for most comedians.

"But a week later I got an even bigger high from teaching eighty people a meditation workshop."

"You never know who you are going to touch and when. Particularly with Irish people it's an epidemic of just beating ourselves up. We are experts.

"But I think if even a few people learn from what I am talking about, and I manage to do it in a light enough and entertaining way that the message actually goes in, then I get such a buzz out of it. I love it.

"My mission, if I have one, is to teach as many people out there that there are tools you can reach for."
