Today FM DJ Ed Smith said putting off his heart check nearly killed him after a dramatic hospital scare.

The Ed's Songs of Praise presenter was rushed to St James's Hospital in Dublin after suddenly falling ill.

He wrote on Twitter: "So earlier today I ran into some serious trouble with the ticker.

"Thanks to the brilliance of the ambulance service and the heroes in James's I'm still here to tweet the tale.

"GET YOUR HEART CHECKED!!

"Just do it! I kept putting it off and IT damn nigh killed me."

The radio star was flooded with messages from well-wishers, with fellow presenter Dermot Whelan adding: "Ed! What the heck?? So glad you’re okay fella. Mind your bad self and let us know if you need anything."

And DJ Ed was grateful for the huge outpouring of support, again urging his 11,000 followers to attend a check-up as soon as possible.

He added: "Thanks for all the gorgeous concern and support gang.

"I'm doing good so turn that kindness on yourselves now and make that appointment."
