Sekiwake Tochinoshin gained momentum toward a promotion to ozeki, beating top maegashira Tamawashi on Tuesday to collect his third win in as many days at the Summer Grand Sumo Tournament at Ryogoku Kokugikan in Tokyo.
The Georgian wrestler steadily advanced forward after the jump-off as he delivered powerful thrusts against Tamawashi. After driving the maegashira to the edge of the ring, Tochinoshin showed perfect timing to slap his opponent to the surface.
A total of 33 wins over three consecutive tournaments is the benchmark for a sekiwake to earn promotion to the ozeki rank. Tochinoshin won the New Year tournament with a 14-1 record and posted 10 wins in the Spring tournament in March.
In the day's final bouts, the two yokozuna also kept their records perfect. Hakuho cruised past No. 2 maegashira Shohozan, while Kakuryu forced out top maegashira Kaisei.
