Toby Stephens and Claire Skinner to star in A Day in the Death of Joe Egg revival

Toby Stephens and Claire Skinner will star in a revival of Peter Nichols’ 1967 play A Day in the Death of Joe Egg.

It will be the first time the two actors have worked together since they both starred in BBC drama Perfect Strangers 18 years ago.

The production will be directed by Simon Evans at Trafalgar Studios, where it will open in September this year. He also directed a production of Killer Joe at the same venue last year, which starred Orlando Bloom.

The play tells the story of a married couple and their 10-year-old disabled daughter Josephine, who they nickname ‘Joe Egg’. It was inspired by Nichols’ own life and won Tony Awards when it transferred to Broadway in 1968, including a best actor award for Albert Finney. It was later made into a film starring Alan Bates in 1972.

The last major West End revival was in 2001, with Clive Owen and Victoria Hamilton starring in the lead roles.

Stephens’ last theatre appearance was in Oslo at the National Theatre, while Skinner starred in The Father at the Kiln (then Tricycle Theatre).

A Day in the Death of Joe Egg will open on September 21 and run until November 30. Tickets go on sale today.
