Motorsport champion Toby Price has made history by becoming the first person to win both the buggy and bike categories of Australia's toughest off-road motorsport event.
The Finke Desert Race sees competitors navigate a notorious 229 kilometre dirt track from Alice Springs to the remote community of Aputula and back over two days.
Toby Price claimed his first win in the buggy category when he crossed the finish line in first place shortly before 9:00am on Monday.
It is his seventh victory in the race, after taking out the bike category six times.
He also registered a record-breaking time of one hour and 39 minutes on the first leg of the race, beating his own 2019 time in the buggy category by more than five minutes.
"It's unreal and it's something we've been chasing for a while now, and just each and every year it's slipped away," he said.
The race was cancelled last year amid the coronavirus pandemic and returned this year with about 1,000 entrants, who travelled from across Australia.
In 2019, Price's hopes of victory were dashed when his buggy suffered a mechanical failure.
"Now that we've gotten this one out of the way, we might come back and try and do the double," he said.
The return leg of the bike journey has been cancelled because of an emergency incident.
