Toby Carvery staff share the eight things they really want to tell customers but can't

There are few meals more satisfying than a roast dinner so it's easy to see why the popularity of restaurants such as continues to grow.

The chain now has more than 150 restaurants across the UK, offering customers a roast any day of the week (or breakfast if you get up early enough).

But while you're tucking into your meal have you ever wondered what staff were really thinking?

Well, according to MirrorOnline , Toby Carvery employees have shared a mixture of the chain's secrets, what they wish customers knew in advance of their visits and why it's never easy to forget a shift.

Below, we've rounded-up what they said:

1. Yes, staff get free food

A typical roast from Toby Carvery (Derby Telegraph)

This is perhaps the biggest perk of the job.

Who doesn't love piling their plate high with roast potatoes and Yorkshire puddings, and it's even better when you don't have to pay for it.

2. We say sorry hundreds of time per shift

There's customers everywhere, weaving in between them - while grinning and apologising - has become quite the skill.

We know it gets rather busy, but we would really appreciate it if you could leave a bit of room for us to get through while we're clearing tables.

3. Please refill your own drinks

If you've ordered a bottomless drink and are able to go and refill it yourself, please do so.

And don't even get us started on customers who want a top up every five minutes.

4. It's all gravy

At the end of a long day, they say you should try and leave your work behind as you head home, but when we open our front door, there's one thing that prevents us from forgetting - the smell of gravy.

There have been many occasions where I've arrived home smelling of gravy. Oooh tasty.

5. Sometimes, running out of meat can be a good thing

When the meat runs out it can often mean the end of the shift is near, according to staff (Publicity Picture)

We won't judge you if we see you've piled your plate super high.

Actually the more you eat, the better for us, as sometimes when food supplies run low, we're able to leave early. Jackpot!

6. Staff discount makes us VERY popular

Who doesn't want to shave some money off the cost of their Sunday roasts?

Our staff perks go down a treat with family and friends.

7. Working when hungover isn't a big deal

Working with a hangover is less than ideal say employees (Loughborough Echo)

For many people, the idea of going into work while nursing a hangover sounds like a nightmare, but not so much when you work at Toby Carvery.

Staff are able to feed their hangovers with all the food they like, so most people aren't afraid to come in when they're feeling rough.

8. Don't forget to tip

While the carvery might be self service, workers still have to tidy up after you, so before you leave to go home and put your feet up in front of the telly, make sure to spare a thought for those who are run off their feet on Sunday afternoons.
