Toby Carvery and All Bar One owner set to close up to 20 sites across the country

The owner of All Bar One, Harvester and Toby Carvery has announced closures across the UK-wide chain of bars and restaurants.

Mitchells & Butlers described the future as both “challenging and uncertain” after a slump in sales this year due to months of closure and Covid-19 lockdown restrictions.

The company, which also owns O'Neills and Miller & Carter steakhouses, is currently working with advisers at CBRE to offload a number of leasehold sites but has not revealed which venues could be affected.

The company has venues across Nottinghamshire including All Bar One in the city centre, Toby Carvery restaurants in Colwick and Mansfield, and Harvester in Wilford.

A statement said: "As announced in September, M&B re-opened the vast majority of its estate, approximately 95 per cent, after the first lockdown ended.

"The remaining sites have been under review on a case-by-case basis since, taking into account factors such as expected footfall and business layout.

"We have taken the difficult decision not to reopen some of these sites and are working with leaseholders on next steps."

In October, the group began redundancy consultations with staff although it has not been announced how many of the 44,000 jobs might be at risk.

The company, which operates more than 1,700 sites, previously announced sales had dropped by 35 per cent since the start of the year up to September 19, while like for like sales also fell by six per cent in the first three weeks of September.
