Toby Alderweireld lined up by European giants as Man Utd interest fades

Juventus are weighing up whether to trigger Toby Alderweireld’s £25million buyout clause.

Tottenham central defender Alderweireld will be available for the cut-price fee this summer, a fact which is attracting perennial Italian champions Juve.

Spurs activated a one-year option at the turn of the year to extend the Belgium international’s contract until 2020. But by doing so, they also triggered a separate clause allowing the player to leave for £25m before the last two weeks of the upcoming transfer window.

Manchester United were previously interested in Alderweireld when Jose Mourinho was their manager, but under his successor Ole Gunnar Solskjaer are looking for a back-up centre-back rather than the first-choice stopper the 30 year-old would be.

And that will boost the hopes of Juventus , who are targeting up to two new central defenders this summer as they aim to maintain their domestic dominance and be more of a threat at the business end of the Champions League.

Much-travelled Alderweireld began his career with Dutch club Ajax, then moved to Spain's Atletico Madrid.

A season's loan to Southampton brought him to England in September 2014 and Spurs snapped him up for £11.5m the following summer after he impressed for Saints.

He spent much of the second half of the 2017-18 campaign out of the team following a November hamstring injury, but has played in 27 of this season's 31 Premier League matches, starting all but one of them.

Alderweireld gave little indication he is set to leave Spurs with his excited response to the players training at their state-of-the-art new stadium for the first time on Thursday.

After the session, Alderweireld posted on his Instagram story: "This is special, far beyond my expectations."

Tottenham are expected to finally christen White Hart Lane's replacement properly on Wednesday night, with Crystal Palace's Premier League visit, provided a final warm-up event this weekend passes off without major problems.
