Toby Alderweireld focused on starting season at Tottenham amid transfer uncertainty

Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld insists he is not looking to leave the club this summer.

The 30-year-old made 34 Premier League appearances last season and formed a solid centre-back partnership with Jan Vertonghen.

Alderweireld has just one year left to run on his current deal, which contains a £25million release clause.

The uncertainty over his future has alerted clubs such as Roma to his availability, but the Belgium international says he is keen to remain in north London.

"I've always said, I'm focused on Spurs and trying to deliver the job that I need to do," he told reporters after the 3-2 victory over Juventus in the Audi Cup.

When asked if he expects to be a Spurs player for the start of the season, he replied: "Yes, that's my focus.

Standard Sport understands Tottenham had been keeping tabs on Sampdoria defender Joachim Andersson as a replacement if Alderweireld decided to leave.

But the former Ajax and Atletico Madrid man is happy to stay put after a show of faith from coach Mauricio Pochettino.

"In football, everything can go quick but my focus is on Spurs and to be ready for the start of the season," he added.

"The manager knows that I'm committed to the team and to the club. Today I was made captain which shows the manager's trust in me."
