Toby Alderweireld explains why Tottenham were 'unfortunate' to lose late on against Liverpool

Toby Alderweireld has claimed that Tottenham were "unfortunate" to fall to a 2-1 defeat against Liverpool on Sunday.

Taking a shock lead inside the first minute as Harry Kane headed in from close range after Son Heung-min's effort had crashed off the bar towards him, the league leaders kept up their unbeaten start to the Premier League season courtesy of second half goals from Jordan Henderson and Mohamed Salah.

Spurs did defend extremely well throughout the game and perhaps could have left with points in the bag had Son's shot been slightly lower as he struck the crossbar after rounding Alisson.

A hard one to take after getting back on track in midweek with a 5-0 win over Red Star Belgrade, the Belgian international praised the performance and stated that they were just unlucky.

Speaking after the defeat at Anfield, he said: "I think we fought hard. Of course they put us under pressure, we defended as a team, everybody worked hard, ran a lot. We are unfortunate to lose in this kind of way.

"We should have had the ball even more, try to hurt them a little more. There were some opportunities.

"If we played through their pressure, we could have hurt them more but at the end with the chance of Son, it’s 2-0 and a whole different game. I think today was unlucky."

It was virtually all Liverpool following Kane's early strike before Spurs threatened in the closing stages to grab an equaliser.

The team just couldn't keep hold of the ball in the first half and the experienced defender believes that had a big impact on the result.

"We lost the ball too easily I think," he added. "Then they can put pressure, pressure, pressure.

"If we were better on the ball, we could have had more. But we were unfortunate to lose today.

"We put in a good performance but nobody’s happy about that.

"We should have at least a point here to help us get to a normal level again."
