Toby Alderweireld has claimed that Tottenham are heading in the "right direction" despite failing to register a Premier League win since Boxing Day.
Losing narrowly against runaway league leaders Liverpool in their previous league game, the Lilywhites couldn't manage to register three points at Vicarage Road as they drew 0-0 against Watford.
Having Paulo Gazzaniga to thank for expertly saving Troy Deeney's penalty midway through the second half, the visitors were 10.04 millimetres away from sealing a stoppage-time win as Erik Lamela's effort was just cleared in time by debutant Ignacio Pussetto.
Another frustrating day at the office for Spurs given that Chelsea also dropped points in the battle for a top four spot after losing at Newcastle United, Jose Mourinho did leave Hertfordshire with some positives.
Keeping in-form Watford goalless meant that his side registered only their second clean sheet in his 15 games in charge and a first on the road in the league since the win over Cardiff City on New Year's Day 2019.
There has been a lot of chopping and changing at the back in recent weeks as the head coach looks to find his best defence to give Spurs a platform to go on and win games.
While that does make it difficult for Toby Alderweireld and Co, the Belgian defender believes that the team are improving at the back.
"It's not easy," he said on the recent changes in defence after the draw at Watford. "But on the other hand you only see us improving.
"In the Liverpool game I think we defended very well. Today, in a difficult moment we defended very well and a clean sheet, the first one in a while.
"So we're going in the right direction, especially defensively."
Japhet Tanganga has forced his way into Mourinho's side over the past week after starting against Liverpool, Middlesbrough and Watford.
Used at left-back to help nullify the threat of Ismaila Sarr, Alderweireld believes his teammate handled the game well after picking up a yellow card very early on.
"The same [as last weekend]. Good games and today on a yellow quite quickly so that's not easy but I think he handled it very well," added the centre-back.
"He handled it well, he had a difficult opponent but I think he handled it well today."
Three points have been hard to come by in the league recently with the team's last victory coming against Brighton & Hove Albion.
Spurs are going to need to start stringing together a run of results if they want to finish in the top four come May and Alderweireld is confident that the wins will soon follow.
"I think we just try to improve our game and I think we are," said the 30-year-old
"If you see the last three games, we're improving and that's the way to go. If we work like this, play like this today, I think the three points will start coming."
