Toby Alderweireld has finally ended speculation over his future by signing a new deal at Tottenham Hotspur until 2023.
The Belgian has repeatedly been linked with moves away from north London in recent years, and was available for just £25million this summer due to a clause in his contract.
However no club came forward to make a concrete bid for the 30-year-old, and following the appointment of Jose Mourinho as the club's new manager last month he has now committed his future to Spurs.
Mourinho was a known admirer of Alderweireld during his time at Manchester United , and was left frustrated when attempts to sign him didn't prove successful.
Despite the contract issues he has always remained a mainstay of the Spurs defence, and has now made 179 appearances for the club in all competitions since arriving from Ateltico Madrid in the summer of 2015 after a successful loan spell at Southampton .
He helped the club to the Champions League final last season, and has featured in all but one of their Premier League matches in the current campaign.
"I am very, very happy," said Alderweireld after signing a new deal that will keep him at the club until he's 34.
"I think no words can describe. I think another couple of years here at Spurs, there is no place I can be happier.
"I am honoured to play for this club and am a small piece of getting to the next level."
Tottenham face Mourinho's former club Chelsea on Sunday, knowing that a win would see them leap into the Premier League's top four.
