Toby Alderweireld drops big hint about his Spurs future amid talk of summer exit

Toby Alderweireld could have potentially played his last game for Spurs following Saturday's Champions League final defeat against Liverpool.

Due to be out of contract at the end of June with his deal set to expire, the Lilywhites took out an option at the start of the year to extend his stay in N17 by a further 12 months.

However, that now means he can depart the club in the summer for only £25million providing a club pays that amount before the final two weeks of the summer transfer window.

Manchester United, Barcelona and Juventus have all been linked with the defender so far and more teams will no doubt be interested following a very good season in the capital.

Spurs fans are desperate for the player to remain at the club and his comments after the loss against Liverpool suggest he may well still be around this time next year as he is targeting another final with Mauricio Pochettino's team.

Asked if the pain of losing could potentially spark a new era at Spurs, Alderweireld said: "Yes. We are going to think like this in the next couple of days or weeks.

"Of course everybody is very disappointed but we have to look at it like this.

"Its the next step that we have taken and now we have to keep going. Not think: ‘Oh we are happy with the final and maybe in a couple of years [we’ll be back].’

"No, no. Next year we want to be here again.

"That’s the mentality, the philosophy we have in this group. To improve every season.

"And again with the new stadium, with the new vibe in the team, we’ll do good."
