Toby Alderweireld breaks his silence as Roma director talks up move for Tottenham defender

Roma director Gianluca Petrachi has confirmed his interest in signing Toby Alderweireld from Tottenham Hotspur.

The defender has been widely linked with a move away from north London with his contract set to expire in just 12 months time.

Alderweireld also has a release clause of £25million, meaning that the club could look to offload the Belgian to recoup as much of that as possible, with the Italian side leading the race for his signature.

Speaking to Football-Italia.net , Petrachi confirmed Roma's interest in Alderweireld, and hinted that he's hopeful of securing a good deal.

He said: "I realise there is a release clause for Alderweireld, but Baldini has a strong rapport with Spurs directors, he worked there for many years and can support Roma in signing Alderweireld.

“If you want to say that Baldini negotiates on our behalf, then that is incorrect.

"I want it to be clear that he is of support to Roma and in the specific case of Alderweireld is an idea to help us save a bit of money.

"We’d be happy if we could sign him tomorrow without paying the release clause."

While Alderweireld's future remains in doubt, the defender appears to be keeping his focus as he returns to training with his teammates.

The central defender was pictured at Tottenham Hotspur HQ as Mauricio Pochettino's squad regrouped as their pre-season schedule kicks into gear.

Fans will be hoping that the Belgian can agree a new deal with the north London side to end any speculation regarding a move away, as the 30-year-old is certainly a popular figure among the Spurs fans.

If a deal can't be agreed for him to stay, then you can be assured that Tottenham won't allow him to leave on the cheap.
