Toby Alderweireld bids emotional farewell to Tottenham after completing £13m transfer to Qatar

Toby Alderweireld has bid an emotional farewell to Tottenham after completing his £13million transfer to Al-Duhail in Qatar.

The Belgium defender has agreed a deal to move to the Middle East, bringing to an end a six-year spell at Spurs during which he made 236 appearances.

Tottenham have looked to reshape their defence following the appointment of Nuno Espirito Santo as manager and Fabio Paratici coming in as sporting director, and are trying to negotiate a deal to sign Atalanta centre-back Cristian Romero.

After Spurs confirmed Alderweireld’s departure, the 32-year-old wrote a message to Tottenham fans on Twitter: “Six years, two homes, a Champions League Final and so many memories.

“You made me feel a part of your club the moment I walked out at White Hart Lane and roared us on, no matter what, into our new, special stadium.

“Thank you first to the fans and then to my team-mates and every incredible member of the Spurs’ staff, backroom and beyond.

“This club will always be in mine and my family’s heart. Love Toby.”
