JAISALMER: Police arrested a man for killing his wife in Barmer district on Saturday. The man strangulated his wife as he wanted to remarry to get a son, but could not do so because of his wife.
The man had earlier claimed that he and his family were attacked by an unknown person, but was arrested on Saturday on the basis of the statements given by his daughter.
The accused, Shera Ram, had reportedly attacked his wife and daughter on September 26, at their home in Batadu Rampura village in Barmer district. He hit both of them with sticks and allegedly strangulated his wife to death. His brother filed a police complaint next day claiming the three had been attacked and that his brother and niece were rushed to the hospital, whereas his sister-in-law Saraswati had died after being strangulated.
The accused’s 11-year-old daughter, Durga was injured and unconscious when hospitalised. After being discharged, she told the police that her father had beaten her and her mother with sticks and later strangulated her mother to death.
Shera Ram had got himself admitted to Jodhpur hospital claiming head injuries, from where he was discharged on Friday. Police then arrested him on Saturday.
According to Barmer SP Anand Sharma, Shera Ram wanted to remarry for a son. “They were married for 13 years and had a daughter. Shera Ram wanted to remarry for a son, but could not do so because of his wife. He attacked Saraswati at night, which woke Durga up. She came to rescue her mother when Shera Ram pushed her and she fell from the stairs. She has suffered injuries on her head, face and eyes. Later, he strangulated his wife. To stage it as a case of loot, he scattered everything in the house,’’ said Sharma.
