To buy a dog, admire the snow and party: Ridiculous ways covid rules were broken

Abuse in supermarkets, discos and driving miles just to see snowfall are some of the most ridiculous reasons people broke covid rules in the last few weeks.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced a third lockdown on January 4, meaning tough restrictions were once again rolled out in order to battle the spread of coronavirus.

With it came strict rules about staying indoors. The PM said people are able to leave their homes to exercise, go food shopping or get medicine.

The public are also urged to stay local and not travel too far from where they live, e ven to exercise.

The rules have once again been very tough, and while the vast majority of people are sticking to the guidelines some people have been issued with coronavirus fines.

Police officers have been very busy the last few weeks and have issued fines across the country - some for unbelievable reasons.

Here we take a look back at some of the fines issued in our region.

Driver travels miles to pick up eBay parcel

The driver was stopped on the M57, police said (Merseyside Police)

Last weekend a driver undertook a massive journey just so he could pick up an eBay parcel.

He was caught breaking lockdown rules by driving from Bolton to pick it up.

Merseyside's Roads Policing Unit said the rule-flouter was stopped on the M57.

The force said the driver was travelling from the Greater Manchester town to pick up the item, but "admitted he knew he shouldn't" have.

The driver was given a fine for breaking lockdown restrictions.

50-mile journey just to admire snow

The car had four people from four separate households inside (Derbyshire Police)

Four people were fined after a group of friends broke lockdown rules to travel 50 miles "to look at snow".

Tweeting from a Derbyshire Police account, a spokesperson said the unessential journey resulted in a dangerous crash.

The car rolled on its side, with the front window smashing.

The four people involved were all from different households and were issued with a fine, the force added.

It tweeted: "Four people travelled over 50 miles from St Helens to Bamford, #Highpeak to "look at the snow", but resulted in rolling their car on its side.

"Is this essential? No! All who are from different households issued with Covid19 tickets #StayHomeSaveLives "

A disco in the height of lockdown

Police issued almost 200 covid fines over the weekend in Merseyside (Roads Policing Unit)

Between January 15 and 17, a total of 193 fines were issued to those breaking coronavirus regulations.

On Friday, January 15, a 38-year-old man was fined after officers were called at 11.45pm to reports of a house party in a property on North Sudley Road in Mossley Hill.

Inside they found between 15-20 people and disco equipment present.

The following day at 9.30am officers attended at a property on Smithdown Road and found a number of people and evidence of a gathering overnight.

The occupier of the house, a 22 year-old man was issued with a fine.

To buy a dog

A couple were handed a find for breaching Covid restrictions after travelling from the south east to Liverpool to buy a dog.

Merseyside police said a couple made the massive journey from Hertfordshire to Liverpool to purchase the pet.

They were stopped and reported for a Covid breach and were also found not to be driving with insurance.

A fishing trip

Three men, aged 23, 23 and 22 who were issued with fines for participating in a gathering after being found inside a small fishing tent at Sutton Mill Dam in St Helens on January 16.

Abuse in supermarkets

Two Aldi shopper were slapped with fines as soon as they left a Merseyside store after police spotted them in the aisles without masks.

The officers acted after they also witnessed the customers make their way around the supermarket without obeying social distancing rules in place amid the Covid pandemic.

Police confronted and fined the men, aged 18 and 21, £200 each, moments after they left the Aldi on on Cronton Road, Huyton on January 14.

Students' 300 mile round trip to Liverpool for 'change of scenery'

A car of students was found to have travelled on a 300-mile round trip to Liverpool for a "change of scenery".

The pair breached Covid essential travel rules before being stopped by police on their journey.

They travelled from Preston to Liverpool via Sheffield before being spotted on the M62 heading towards Liverpool.

Police said the driver had stopped in Sheffield to pick up his friend before an intended drive to Liverpool.

Depending on the route, this is a 300 to 400-mile round trip lasting up to four hours.

Travelling 100 miles to Liverpool for party

A man and woman were fined hundreds of pounds for travelling 100 miles for a party.

The woman from Staffordshire was pulled over with a man from Birmingham on their way back from the New Year's Eve party in Liverpool.

Officers stopped the car on the M6 on New Year's Day.

They discovered the two occupants were not from the same household and were in breach of Covid rules.

The woman, 23, and man, 21, were both fined £200 for their offences.

A Staffordshire Police spokesman said: "We have issued fines to two people from different households found travelling together from Tamworth and Birmingham to Liverpool for a party.

"Officers stopped a vehicle on the M6 Hilton services on Friday, January 1 and found people from multiple households travelling together in a vehicle.

"A 23-year-old woman from Tamworth and a 21-year-old man from Alum Rock in Birmingham were each issued with a £200 fine."

Amorous behaviour and sexual services

Among those stopped and fined by police included a couple fined for "engaging in amorous behaviour at Crosby Marina" and someone driving in an "anti-social" manner trying to get "sexual services".

They said: "A couple have been fined for engaging in amorous behaviour at Crosby Marina. Not a reasonable excuse under the Covid regulations."

Officers added: "Driving your car in an antisocial manner after having just been observed trying to obtain sexual services has earned one person a S.59 warning and a COVID fine. Definitely not an essential journey."

Meeting friends for a takeaway

Some people were also fined for meeting with other households for a drive.

In one instance, police tweeted: "Couple of friends out for a late night drive. Visiting Otterspool promenade from the Wirral.

“You know what happens next by now - COVID fines issued. This virus is indiscriminate and deadly. Please stay at home."

And in another case they said: "Going for a takeaway with a friend from another household is not permitted. Both issued Covid fines by TS40.

"For those of you who don't get this, I suspect you never will."
