Ben Affleck has spoken about his upcoming role as Batman and compared the character to Hamlet.

The actor, who will star in Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, revealed that he wasn’t nervous about following in Christian Bale’s footsteps in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly.

“Batman is basically the American version of Hamlet,” he said. “We accept that he’s played by actors with different interpretations.”

Affleck, whose last superhero movie was 2003’s negatively received Daredevil, also spoke about how his Batman would be different from previous incarnations.

“He’s at the end of his run and maybe the end of his life. There’s this sort of world-weariness to it,” he said. “He’s on the verge of being swallowed up by the anger and the rage that we see haunt this character in the other manifestations of it. But this guy is further down the line and has become more embittered and cynical.”

The same feature also premiered a number of new images from the film, including a new look at Jesse Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor, with hair that resembles Rachel from Friends, and Bruce Wayne with Diana Prince, AKA Wonder Woman, at a party.

The film, released next March, will expand the DC universe in a way that’s similar to what Marvel has been doing so successfully, introducing new characters and starting off a new chain of interconnected superhero films.
