'To be honest' - Jurgen Klopp names Liverpool legend he'd love to manager

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has said Steven Gerrard is the player he would pick from history to coach.

Gerrard left Liverpool at the end of the 2014-15 season and Klopp was appointed by the club early the following campaign, meaning their time together at the club did not overlap.

The former midfielder is rated as one of Liverpool 's all-time great players, having inspired the team to Champions League glory in 2005. Gerrard also won the League Cup three times, the FA Cup twice and the UEFA Cup with the Reds.

Klopp has also been able to enjoy glory at Anfield, with the 2019 Champions League win backed up by the club's first top-flight triumph in 30 years.

Speaking to This Is Anfield, Klopp was asked what player from history he would love to manage if he had the chance and his answer was one that will make Reds supporters happy.

"That’s easy," he said. "It’s Stevie.

"When we played in Sydney three or four years ago and after the season we didn’t have a proper team and we invited [Steve] McManaman, [Daniel] Agger, Jamie Carragher and Stevie.

"To be honest, I knew Liverpool and I saw him playing, of course, but a little bit advanced age group wise but they were all really good.

"But Stevie, what a player he still was then! I think he was already retired but maybe a youth coach here. Incredible. Stevie and me together in the roles, he as the man on the pitch and me as a coach that would have been nice. So it’s Stevie.

"Six years ago it would have been a different answer but now I’m here and I know him as a person and as a player so that’s now an easy answer."

Gerrard worked under Klopp at Liverpool on the coaching staff between 2017 and 2018, taking up roles as a youth coach and then the Under-18 and Under-19 teams.

However, he left the Reds in June 2018 to become Rangers manager. Gerrard has steered the team back to the summit of Scottish football in his time there, winning the Scottish Premiership title last term having gone through an entire league season unbeaten.
