TLC member Chilli approves of Weezer 'No Scrubs' cover: 'Clearly, they're not scrubs'

Rivers Cuomo from Weezer ( Rex/Danny Payne )

One of the biggest talking points around the surprise release of Weezer's The Teal Album – a collection of 10 covers ranging from Michael Jackson to Black Sabbath – has been their take on TLC's 1999 classic "No Scrubs".

The rock band released the record earlier this week, after the surprise success of their 2018 cover of Toto's hit "Africa", which they did after a persistant fan campaign paid off.

Their decision to cover the track caused a storm of opinions on social media, with contrasting opinions as to whether the band did the song justice.

"I just thought it was one of those songs that's freakishly popular," singer Rivers Cuomo said in the album breakdown on Apple Music.

"I was trying to decide which gender perspective to sing it from, then I saw this tweet that said: 'If you're a guy covering a song by a girl, you gotta keep the pronouns. For those three minutes, you're gay.' So I was like: 'Cool, let's try this.'"

One person who does approve is TLC's Rozanda "Chilli" Thomas, who told Rolling Stone that she thought the band "did a great job" and even hopes they can perform it together.

"I'm definitely familiar with the group," she said. "I totally get why any girl would do it [cover the song], but when guys do it, I go: 'Clearly, they're not scrubs.' If they were scrubs, they wouldn't sing the song with this type of confidence."

Thomas also admired Weezer's cover of Jackson's hit "Billie Jean", commenting: "You gotta be pretty brave to do any of his songs, no matter who you are."
