Titans WR Adam Humphries says Tom Brady’s age factored in decision to pass on Patriots

The Tennessee Titans made a solid free agency acquisition earlier this year in wide receiver Adam Humphries.

But they weren’t the only team vying for the wideout.

The defending Super Bowl champion New England Patriots were also in the race. Humphries says part of the reason he passed on the opportunity with the team had to do with the age of quarterback Tom Brady.

Brady will turn 42 before the start of the 2019 season. Brady has stated multiple times that he plans to stay on the field until he’s 45.

“Obviously, he’s the G.O.A.T. That’s that simple,” Humphries told The Athletic of Brady. “But there’s so much that factors into a decision. It was a four-year deal. Who knows how many (years) he’s got left? There’s a lot that goes into it.”

Humphries would have loved to be on the field with the star signal-caller, but likes the “young talent” of the Titans offense.

“… Obviously the chance to play with him would have been awesome, but a lot of things factor into that decision,” he said. “Ultimately, I thought this was coming here to a team that was on the rise and with young talent on the offense and a really good defense. They’d had a taste of the playoffs. I felt like my need at the slot position was great. I felt like I could really contribute and start something new here.”

The 25-year-old Humphries, who is the same age as Titans quarterback Marcus Mariota, signed with the Titans on a four-year contract worth $36 million and $19 million guaranteed.
Humphries will get his chance to make an impact within a Titans team that looks to go from “good to great” when the 2019 season kicks off later this year.
