Titans TE Jonnu Smith has been a factor in wake of Delanie Walker’s absence

The Tennessee Titans have had more than their fair share of offensive troubles eight games through the 2019 season.

But the team seems to be finding rhythm with quarterback Ryan Tannehill after the former Miami Dolphin took the reins during Week 6’s matchup against the Denver Broncos.

One target on offense Tannehill has found chemistry with lately has been tight end Jonnu Smith, with veteran Delanie Walker missing some action in the team’s past two games.

Smith led Titans receivers with six catches for 78 yards and a touchdown in Sunday’s 27-23 home win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

He’s now reeled in 15 receptions this season for 239 yards and one touchdown, averaging 15.9 yards per catch.

This isn’t the first time Smith has stepped up in Walker’s absence, initially struggling in 2018 and ultimately ending off on a high note.

He totaled 20 receptions for 258 yards and three touchdowns, with a average of 12.9 yards per reception by the end of the year.

But it isn’t just about the numbers.

Titans head coach Mike Vrabel praised Smith’s work ethic when he met with the media on Monday.

“He is a tireless worker, and he has a great attitude,” he said. “He comes to work every single day ready to learn, ready to improve. He is focused in meetings. (Tight ends coach) Todd Downing has worked very well with him one-on-one.”

It will be interesting to see how much of a factor Smith continues to be this season as the Titans move forward and face the Carolina Panthers on Sunday.
