Titans’ Taylor Lewan makes Touchdown Wire’s list of top 11 OTs

After getting off to a rocky start to the 2019 campaign following a suspension and a penalty-riddled return, Tennessee Titans left tackle Taylor Lewan rounded into form as one of the best tackles in the sport.

Lewan finished with an overall Pro Football Focus grade of 80.2, good enough for 11th among all tackles and sixth among left tackles.

But the proof of the three-time Pro Bowler’s elite status extends beyond what he did last season.

The former No. 11 overall pick is one of two tackles in the NFL since 2016 to post top-10 PFF grades in both pass protection and run-blocking, with the other being new San Francisco 49ers left tackle, Trent Williams.

With all that said, it comes as no surprise that Lewan made Touchdown Wire’s list of the top-11 tackles in the NFL, coming in at No. 10. Among left tackles that made this list, Lewan was ranked as the sixth-best, which is a bit low.

Drafted in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft, Taylor Lewan has been a good-to-great left tackle for the Tennessee Titans for the bulk of his six years in the league. As he enters his seventh season in the NFL, Lewan is coming off one of his best years in the league. Last season he allowed just two sacks and a seven quarterback hurries, which was his lowest mark since his rookie season, when he saw just 353 snaps overall.

Lewan has a bit of a brawler’s mentality, which serves him well in the running game. He can work combination blocks and down blocks with ferocity and power, and in Tennessee’s diverse running scheme he handles everything that is asked of him conceptually quite well.

Despite all of his success, Lewan didn’t get much respect from Madden NFL 21. The left tackle was given an overall rating of 84, which was worse than five left tackles who posted a lower overall PFF grade than him in 2019.
