In the wake of the death of George Floyd, college and professional athletes are using their platform to continue to push for change.
Texas A&M quarterback Kellen Mond is no exception, recently calling for the university to remove the on-campus statue of its former president, Lawrence Sullivan Ross, via a statement on Twitter.
“The values of Texas A&M University do not align with RACISM, VIOLENCE, SLAVERY and SEGREGATION, but Jimbo Fisher’s most prominent saying will always stick with me: ‘Your ACTIONS speak so loud I can’t hear what you’re saying.’ The Lawrence Sullivan Ross Statue NEEDS to be removed. Texas A&M University, I NEED to see ACTION.”
Tennessee Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill, who played out his college career for the Aggies, took to Twitter to speak out and support Mond.
“I’m with Kellen Mond. We can’t continue to ignore the evil perpetrated by Sullivan Ross.”
The message has had a lot of reach both within the community and beyond, and is beginning to spark some signs of serious action.
Texas A&M’s current president, Michael K. Young, recently said he would “invite discussion for action with a diverse group of leaders and voices to meet regularly with senior leadership and myself.”
