The Tennessee Titans have given themselves more wiggle room financially after restructuring the contract of safety Kevin Byard.
According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Titans made the move prior to the Week 1 win over the Denver Broncos, giving themselves an extra $6.12 million in 2020 cap space. Byard will now make $9.1 million this season.
Per Over the Cap, Tennessee had $2.7 million in cap space before restructuring the safety’s deal. Now they’ll have a shade under $9 million to work with.
Tennessee originally inked Byard to a five-year, $70.5 million contract back in 2019, which at the time made him the highest-paid safety in NFL history.
It remains to be seen what the Titans will do with the extra money. More likely than not, this is a move to prepare the team for a lowered salary cap in 2021.
Byard once again proved his worth on Monday night against the Broncos, as he led the team in total tackles and forced a key fumble that led to the Titans’ first touchdown of the game.
