Titans release statement on passing of former coach Gunther Cunningham

Former Tennessee Titans assistant coach Gunther Cunningham has passed away at 72.

The team released this statement via Twitter on Monday.

“Our deepest sympathies go out to Gunther Cunningham’s family and friends. He was a great man and a great coach.”

Former Titans head coach Jeff Fisher also reacted to the news on Twitter.

“Was sad to learn of the passing of my friend, Gunther Cunningham,” he wrote. “I had the honor to coach with him & against him. You’ll never meet another man with such a passion for people, family & football. We will miss him deeply. Our thoughts & prayers are with Rene and the family.”

Cunningham served as an assistant head coach/linebackers coach under Jeff Fisher from 2001-03.

Cunningham also made stops in at Baltimore, Indianapolis, San Diego, Los Angeles, Kansas City and Detroit over the course of his NFL coaching career. He served as the Chiefs head coach for two seasons.
