It was perplexing to see the Tennessee Titans release their best backup interior offensive lineman, Corey Levin, on Wednesday but thankfully the move was just procedural.
The Titans announced they have re-signed Levin just one day after releasing him. In addition, the Titans announced the signing of former Chicago Bears edge rusher Trevis Gipson, who indicated on Wednesday night that he was going to sign in Tennessee.
Buy Titans TicketsTo make room for those two players, the Titans released offensive lineman Justin Murray and officially placed wide receiver Kyle Philips on injured reserve.
Also, there was a change on the practice squad, as the Titans dropped outside linebacker Sam Okuayinonu and added kicker Cade York. The Titans still have an empty spot on their practice squad, so another addition should be coming. Perhaps it’s Murray, but we shall see.
Gipson is a really intriguing addition. He gives an already impressive Titans front yet another weapon who can get after the quarterback. Here’s some of what we wrote on him on Wednesday night:
A former fifth-round pick of the Bears, Gipson has played in 33 games the past two seasons, tallying 10 sacks, including a career-high seven in 2021 before seeing his sack production fall off in 2022.
But there’s important context to add there.
The Bears switched their defense from a 3-4 to a 4-3 once head coach Matt Eberflus took over in 2022, and Gipson simply wasn’t a fit in that system, which was the reason behind his release.
The issue with scheme fit was also confirmed by Bears general manager Ryan Poles and assistant general manager Ian Cunningham, both of whom heaped praise on Gipson for his leadership and effort.
Titans fans got a really good taste of Gipson in preseason Week 1 after he tallied eight pressures and one sack.
He’ll have a fantastic opportunity to thrive as a rotational piece who figures to fly under the radar as defenses focus more attention on guys like Jeffery Simmons, Denico Autry, Harold Landry and Arden Key.
