Titans’ Mike Vrabel addresses Rashad Weaver’s legal trouble

For the first time since news broke that edge rusher and 2021 fourth-round pick Rashad Weaver is facing one count of simple assault, Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Vrabel addressed the situation on Saturday after Day 2 of rookie minicamp, where we got our first look at the Pittsburgh product.

“We understand the severity of the accusations,” Vrabel said, per David Boclair of Sports Illustrated. “We take them very seriously. But we’re also going to allow the legal process to play its part and run its course.”

As far as what Vrabel has seen from Weaver over the first two days of rookie minicamp, he described the rookie as “attentive” and says he “wants to try to be a good teammate and has taken coaching,”

Many have questioned how the Titans weren’t aware of the serious accusation against Weaver before drafting him. Vrabel says the Titans “stand by the process” of how they evaluate players.

“Having talked to [general manager] Jon [Robinson] and having met with Jon as much as I have, his scouts and our coaches – we stand by the process of evaluating players,” Vrabel said. “There’s always going to be things that come up, and we’ll do our best to do everything we can to avoid those and then work through them when they happen.”

Weaver, who is accused of grabbing a woman by the neck and pushing her to the ground, leading to her hitting her head and suffering a concussion, will have a preliminary hearing on Oct. 5, two days after the Week 4 contest against the New York Jets.

Weaver has already denied the allegations against him through a statement from his attorney.
