Titans’ initial 53-man roster among oldest in the NFL

The Tennessee Titans once again have one of the oldest initial 53-man rosters in the NFL ahead of the 2021 season.

According to Indianapolis Colts beat writer Andrew Walker, who calculated the average ages of initial 53-man rosters, the Titans have the fifth-oldest squad in the league, with an average age of 26.565 years.

This calculation includes players on the Reserve/COVID-19 list as well, of which the Titans have nine. Since 2017, the Titans have ranked 27th, 20th, 29th and 28th in average age before ranking No. 28 once again in 2021.

The only teams with an older roster are the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (No. 32, 27.018 years), the Chicago Bears (No. 31, 27 years), the Arizona Cardinals (No. 30, 26.911 years), and the Houston Texans (No. 29, 26.792 years).

For a win-now team like the Titans, this is actually a good thing. For a rebuilding team like the Texans, it’s a bad thing.

It helps to have plenty of experience on a roster that is realistically vying for a Super Bowl this season. However, the Titans certainly can’t be classified as over the hill, with the team having the right mix of experience and youth.

Imagine an average age of 26 years being considered old, but here we are. The NFL has truly become a young man’s league.
