Titans HC Mike Vrabel emphasizes need for 3rd QB at NFL Owners Meetings

The Tennessee Titans had an evident need at backup quarterback after Blaine Gabbert failed to deliver consistent performances as Marcus Mariota spent two full games sidelined in 2018.

Earlier this month, the team brought signal-caller Ryan Tannehill aboard via a trade from the Miami Dolphins. But it doesn’t look like the Titans have intentions of stopping there.

The Titans have a veteran figure in Tannehill, but want to be bring on a third, developmental talent as well.

“We are going to have to add somebody to it,” Vrabel said of the position in a report by the team’s Jim Wyatt. “We are going to need a young guy that we can develop.”

Vrabel also referred to Tannehill as a “proven starter” that could bring an instant boost to

“We felt like he’s a proven starter, a starter in this league for a lot of years,” Vrabel said of Tannehill. “We just felt like an opportunity came for us to upgrade the position and we did it.”

Vrabel also continued to make clear that Mariota was the clear starter, as long as he’s able to enter a game.

“Obviously if Marcus is healthy, and he’s available, he’s our starter. We just felt like, to be able to strengthen the position, to have a chance to add a player like Ryan, who could help us if Marcus isn’t available, then we were excited to do so.”

As the 2019 NFL Draft approaches, it will be interesting to see how the Titans go about acquiring a quarterback before the upcoming season.
