The Tennessee Titans addressed their most pressing needs early on in free agency, locking down both quarterback Ryan Tannehill and running back Derrick Henry to ensure the offense stays rolling.
They gained some and they lost some, with the most notable signing being outside linebacker Vic Beasley.
For these efforts, the team received an overall grade of ‘B’ from USA Today’s Nate Davis.
Davis also put the Denver Broncos, Los Angeles Chargers and New York Jets under the same grade category.
“They bailed on the Brady sweepstakes, opting to re-up QB Ryan Tannehill before the legal tampering window opened March 16. GM Jon Robinson then franchised RB Derrick Henry, though the 2019 rushing leader surely wants an extension more than a $10.3 million tag,” he wrote.
Davis sees a number of questionable decisions made, and views Beasley as a gamble.
“Otherwise? Given Robinson still has about $25 million at his fingertips, hard to figure why he gave OT Dennis Kelly a three-year, $21 million deal after letting Conklin leave for Cleveland (3 years, $42 million) – though the numbers square given Kelly is no more than half the player Conklin is. Casey was offloaded, though OLB Vic Beasley ($9.5 million deal for 2020) might be a worthy gamble if coach Mike Vrabel can harness the ability that once allowed the former Falcons first-round pick, still only 27, to lead the league in sacks.”
The Cleveland Browns, Indianapolis Colts and New Orleans Saints stood atop the rankings with an ‘A’ grade.
It will be interesting to see which moves the Titans continue to make ahead of the 2020 season, especially with the 2020 NFL Draft approaching next month.
