Hot on the heels of Hunger Games studio Lionsgate’s announcement of a series of theme-park attractions across Asia and the Middle East, 20th Century Fox are getting in on the movie-ride act too, promising rides based on successful movies such as Titanic, Aliens and Planet of the Apes.
Variety reports that Fox has struck a deal with the United Arab Emirates conglomerate Al Ahli Holding Group to license its properties for a Fox-branded theme park in Dubai, with a projected opening date of 2018.
According to the report, the Dubai resort will cost over $850m to build, and could potentially feature attractions based on Ice Age, Predator and The Simpsons as well as the aforementioned blockbusters. However, Fox will be unable to use its biggest-grossing hit, the James Cameron-directed Avatar, as the film’s rights have already been licensed to Disney.
Titanic’s disaster-themed narrative may not be the best fit for a theme-park ride, but Jeffrey Godsick, president of Fox Consumer Products, said: “We are working on creating an immersive experience that includes motion theatre simulators and will allow you to experience what it was like to be on the Titanic in an exciting way.”
