Tipping Point's Ben Shephard stunned after quizzer mistakes Homer Simpson for poet

Ben Shephard had to stifle his laughter on Tipping Point after a contestant confused legendary poet Homer with a The Simpsons character of the same name.

In Monday's episode, the presenter, 46, posed the question to Dom, a primary school teacher from Manchester: "In his poems, Homer often refers to nectar as the drink of gods and which other substances as their foods?"

Ben was talking about influential Greek poet Homer, but Dom thought he was referring to cartoon character Homer Simpson.

He told Ben: "Well I know he likes doughnuts."

Ben's jaw dropped before he repeated the question and the guest realised his blunder.

In Monday's episode, the presenter was left stunned (ITV)

Ben told him he had the option of passing the question to his teammate Linzi who insisted she would have given the same answer.

The host struggled to keep a straight face as he said: "I think he may have realised he's gone for the wrong Homer", as it was revealed the correct answer was "ambrosia".

Viewers rushed to Twitter to comment on the blunder.

BBC Breakfast host and Strictly Come Dancing star Dan Walker, wrote: "I can't get enough of the changing face of @benshephard #Donuts #Homer #TippingPoint."

Another viewer said: "I've never watched Tipping Point before but I might start. Q: According to Homer the drink of the gods is nectar but what is their food? A: Doughnuts. …oh, I think I got the wrong Homer. Laugh? I thought I was going to do myself an injury."

A third exasperated fan said: "Question on Tipping Point about the food of the Gods in the poem by Homer. 'They both thought it was doughnuts ! I want to go Home now please."

"I genuinely think every time I watch an episode of Tipping Point, it deletes actual knowledge from my brain.", a fourth fan said.

A fifth added: "Oh my God, classic Tipping Point moment 'In his poems Homer refereed to nectar as the drink of the gods, what was their food?' Answer given: ..... donuts Er, I don't think it's that Homer mate!!!."

Ben was left trying to hide his laughter on an another episode earlier this month after a contestant was asked: "Which UK political party shares its name with a collective noun for moles?"

The player was unsure of the answer so passed over to her teammate.

They said: "For some reason, Liberal Democrats is screaming out to me."

Ben struggled to stop smirking and viewers of the show took to Twitter, to share their joy at seeing the host’s hilarious reaction to Alice, who had no idea that the right answer was in fact Labour.

Tipping Point airs weekdays at 4pm on ITV.
