Tipping Point contestant dies before show airs as host Ben Shephard pays tribute

Tipping Point host Ben Shephard has paid tribute to a contestant who passed away before she got to see herself on TV.

The ITV quiz show host took to social media to describe yesterday's episode featuring the late Cath as a "poignant one."

He explained that the "lovely" retired bus driver had passed away before her episode on Tipping Point show was screened.

He added in a tweet: "Since recording the show, lovely contestant Cath, pictured backstage here, has passed away."

His post included a photo of Cath opposite himself and fellow contestants Mark and Afshad.

Similarly, the official Tipping Point Twitter account extended its "sincerest sympathies."

In the episode, Cath answered questions on musicals and playing cards during the first round but, despite her best efforts, the Tipping Point machine only dropped three counters, leaving her placed last out of three.

She then went on to score three counters during her 45 second general knowledge round, opting for drop zone one with her first counter, although the Tipping Point machine didn’t budge.

Ben Shephard posted a pic of himself with Tipping Point contestant Cath, along with her fellow contestants (@benshephard/Twitter)

Counter number two went in drop zone one and also did nothing.

With her final counter, Cath said: "I may as well stay there in drop zone one” but, to her disappointment, the machine gave her nothing.

Having told Shephard, "I don't want to go home," Cath then exited the competition, with Afkad and Mark eventually going on to the head-to-head in a bid to win £10,000.

Fans of Tipping Point took to Twitter to send their messages of condolence to Cath's family. @Henwad said: "Fly high Cath xx"

@cast_bowring1 added: "Goodbye Cath. rest peacefully."

Tipping Point airs weekdays at 4pm on ITV.
