Tipperary stalwart Brian Fox announces retirement

Long-serving Tipperary footballer Brian Fox has announced his retirement.

The news comes almost a year to the day since Fox’s career highlight, Tipp’s Munster final victory over Cork which secured a first provincial title since 1935.

They subsequently lost the All-Ireland semi-final to Mayo, having also been beaten by the same opposition at that stage in 2016 after a memorable Championship run.

The 33-year-old made his senior debut in a League game against Carlow in 2008 and his Championship bow came the following year against Limerick.

In a statement issued through Tipperary GAA, the Éire Óg Annacarty man said: “After 14 years playing with Tipperary, I feel now is the right time to step away from inter-county football.

“I feel very honoured to have been given the opportunity to represent my county and even more privileged to have played alongside and enjoyed a few successes with some of the most talented footballers Tipperary has ever produced.”

Tipperary manager David Power paid tribute to the versatile Fox, saying: “Brian Fox has been a great servant to Tipperary football, he has represented the blue and gold with great distinction over the years.

“He will be a massive loss to the senior panel not only for his leadership on and off the pitch, but he was superb with all the new players that came into the panel, he was always there to help.

“On a personal note, I will never forget his face of pure emotion and joy when that final whistle was blown down in Cork last year and thank him for all the great memories he was part of over the last 10 years.”
