Tipperary GAA mourning death of hurling great Tom McLoughney

Tipperary GAA are mourning the passing today of hurling great Tom McLoughney.

Born in 1940, McLoughney won two All-Ireland titles with his county in 1961 and 1962, scoring the first goal of the 1961 final.

During a golden period for Tipperary, he also won three Munster medals, two National League and two Oireachtas Medals.

McLoughney was part of a Kilruane MacDonaghs outfit that won the North finals in 1959 and 1965, and he was the current club president of the north Tipperary club until his death.

Tipperary GAA said: "As the first MacDonaghs player to win an All-Ireland senior hurling medal, he was an iconic figure in Cloughjordan parish.

"Tom was selected at full-forward on the North Centenary hurling team (1951-2001) and he was honoured with a Laochra Gael Award in 2012.

"Tipperary GAA County Board extends sympathy to Tom’s wife Marie, daughters Eleanor & Mary, son Jack and extended family.

"Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam."

Tipperary County Board Chairman Joe Kennedy said: “I am very saddened to hear of the passing of Tom McLoughney, who made a massive contribution to Tipperary GAA, as a player, selector and in latter years a loyal and dedicated supporter of both club and county.

"Tom was one of life's gentlemen and always a pleasure to meet at games."

Requiem Mass for Tom will take place in St. Flannan's Church, Ardcroney this Monday at 11am followed by burial afterwards in Ardcroney New Cemetery. A live stream of his mass will be available on the Cloughjordan Parish Facebook page.
