Tipperary announce link-up with Setanta College

Tipperary GAA has announced a link-up with Setanta College, which will now oversee strength and conditioning for all county teams from academies to senior level.

The arrangement will be fronted by Des Ryan, former head of sports science and medicine at Arsenal FC, who is now director of coaching and performance at the Thurles-based institute.

New Tipperary senior hurling manager Colm Bonnar and his coach Tommy Dunne are both graduates of Setanta.

Referring to the new arrangement in his address at Monday night’s annual convention, Tipperary chairman Joe Kennedy said: “This is a new approach that will have a co-ordinated structure and will prepare all our players in both codes to develop and transition from youth to adult level.

“Setanta College is a world leader in the delivery of athletic development programs and led by Des Ryan, this partnership will have major benefits for all Tipperary teams in the future.”

Kennedy continued: “I also feel there is a need to review our coaching structures for the development of county teams. This is not a criticism of existing structures but as in any walk of life we should examine what we do to see if it is still fit for purpose.

“To that end, we are in the process of putting a new committee in place to examine all our coaching and underage structures to make recommendations as to how we can improve our structures for the future.”
