Tiny terrier aged 11 left fighting for life after being savaged by bigger dog

A tiny terrier left fighting for life after another dog savaged her is up for a bravery gong.

Trinny was in danger of losing a front leg and had horrific puncture wounds to her chest after the mauling.

Owners Julie Keeling and Mark Aspray have put her forward for the PDSA Pet Survivor awards to recognise her strength. And the charity is still looking for nominations.

PDSA Vet Olivia Anderson-Nathan said: “We’d like to hear from anyone whose pet has an extraordinary story of survival against all odds or who has cheated death by a whisker.”

Trinny, an 11-year-old fox terrier, was treated at Manchester PDSA Pet hospital, where she needed multiple operations to treat her wounds.

Too traumatised to eat, she was hand fed to help her recovery. Incredibly, after months of treatment and love, she made a full recovery.

Other nominations for the awards include a cat left with a fractured jaw after being mowed down by a car.

Little Loopie was rushed to the out-of-hours team at Sheffield PDSA Pet Hospital, and owner James Rowney was warned to prepare for the worst.

His three-year-old cat had severe head injuries and the skin was torn off his jaw, which was also fractured.

Thankfully, Loopie’s jaw was fixed with wire and a feeding tube fitted so he could eat. After an operation to reattach the ripped skin, he spent 12 days in intensive care before he was well enough to go home to James.

Last year, rescue cat Dexter was crowned top pet survivor after being shot through the mouth in a deliberate airgun attack.

Vet Olivia said: “Dexter received the coveted title to recognise his incredible survival spirit, his owners’ dedication and the skill and expertise of all the vets and vet nurses who helped to save his life.”

Nominations are open until September 8 for pets treated by a vet for a life-threatening illness or injury between August 1 2018 and August 31 2019. The winner is decided by a public vote and gets a trophy and luxury pet hamper. Visit pdsa.org.uk to enter.
