Tiny robot dog pulls a 3-tonne AIRPLANE along runway in unbelievable footage

Measuring 1.33 metres long and 90cm tall, and weighing just 130kg, it could be easy to underestimate this adorable robot dog.

But the incredible robot, dubbed HyQReal, is much stronger than it looks, and has even been filmed towing a 3-tonne airplane for more than 10 metres!

Researchers from Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia developed HyQReal to support humans in emergency situations.

The four-legged robot is equipped with a 48 Volt battery, which powers four electric motors connected to four hydraulic pumps. This allows its legs to move, just like a real dog.

To make sure the robot is hard-wearing, the researchers covered it in an aluminium roll cage and a skin made of Kevlar, glass fibre and plastic.

Meanwhile, its feet are made from a special rubber for high traction on the ground.

To put the robot to the test, the researchers tasked it with pulling a small passenger airplane at Genoa Airport.

Amazingly, the tiny robot was able to tow the 3-tonne airplane more than 10 metres along the running, highlighting the android’s power and stability.

In a statement about the robot, the researchers explained: “The long-term goal of the project is to create the hardware, software and algorithms for robust quadruped vehicles for rough terrain that can be tailored to a variety of applications, such as disaster response, agriculture, decommissioning, and inspection.”

This isn't the first time that a robot dog has shown off its power by towing a vehicle.
